Although the application supports only the open XMPP (Jabber) protocol, it supports the use of Transports which will enable you to connect to other networks depending on the Jabber host you choose.

Transports are small computer programs installed on XMPP (Jabber) host servers that translate XMPP (Jabber) messages and addresses into other formats like Skype, Google Talk, etc. and send them through their respective networks. Transports allow XMPP (Jabber) client to connect to other networks depending on which transports your host server supports.

XMPP (Jabber) has many servers to provide connection to users through client programs. Each XMPP (Jabber) user should have it's own account with one of many XMPP (Jabber) services. When a message is sent, it goes from that user's computer to a XMPP (Jabber) server. This server then sends the message to the recipient's XMPP (Jabber) server.
